Sedation Dentistry: Your Key to Anxiety-Free Care

Dental anxiety can leave patients dreading even the simplest dental appointments. And when it comes to more involved treatment, many patients shy away from getting the care they need. Dr. Blackmon and his team at Guided Smiles Prosthodontics & Implant Center understand these concerns and strive to provide anxiety-free care for our valued patients. One of the ways we do that is by offering a range of sedation dentistry options tailored to your unique needs. We invite you to visit our practice in Ponte Vedra to experience the difference.
Is Dental Anxiety Keeping You From Getting the Dental Care You Need?
Dental anxiety is real for many people. You may feel uneasy in the days leading up to an appointment, and if you have more severe dental phobia, you may find yourself avoiding the dentist altogether.
But what are the reasons people develop dental anxiety? One common reason is a previous difficult or traumatic dental experience. Just one unpleasant memory can make it difficult to believe that your next visit can be different. Other reasons patients shy away from their dental appointments include their fear of discomfort, concern about anesthetic shots, worrying about having to keep their mouths open for long periods, or dealing with a strong gag reflex. Others may dread the sound of instruments or certain sensations they have associated with dental care.
Avoiding the dentist can lead to minor problems advancing and becoming more complicated over time, translating to more extensive care. Keeping up with your preventive dental exams and cleanings is one of the best ways to safeguard your smile and lower the need for costly and complex treatments down the road.
How Can Sedation Dentistry Help?
Sedation dentistry helps you feel calmer and at ease while Dr. Blackmon completes your treatment. When coupled with local anesthetics, it helps provide a comfortable patient experience.
The following are some of the sedation options we offer right here at our Ponte Vedra practice:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): You will inhale nitrous oxide gas mixed with oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose, and you should soon feel a sensation of calm and relaxation. This form of sedation can help ease mild to moderate dental anxiety while leaving you awake and responsive. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after treatment, so you can get back to your daily activities right after your appointment.
Oral Sedation: With oral sedation, you will take medication orally before treatment for a deeper level of calm and relaxation. You may feel drowsy and may even drift off into a light sleep, but you will remain conscious and responsive during treatment. Many patients remember little, if any, of their time during treatment. The effects of the oral sedatives can linger, so you’ll need a trusted adult to drive you home for your safety.
IV Sedation: For patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia or those in need of complex or lengthy treatments, Dr. Blackmon may recommend IV sedation. A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) will administer your IV sedation and monitor you throughout treatment for your safety. You’ll remain conscious during treatment but will likely have no recollection of your treatment. We request that a trusted adult accompany you and drive you home for your safety.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for You?
Sedation dentistry has a high safety record when administered by trained and qualified professionals. Before recommending any form of sedation, Dr. Blackmon will review your health history and any medical concerns that may affect your care. He will recommend the type and level of sedation based on your needs and the complexity of treatment.
During your procedure, our team adheres to appropriate safety and monitoring protocols and monitors your vital signs throughout treatment. Your safety and comfort are our top priority at every step.
