Why Choose a Prosthodontist for Your Dental Crowns?

Prosthodontists are the premier tooth restoration experts. After dental school, they undergo at least three years of rigorous instruction to learn the intricacies of restoring healthy smiles. Their advanced education, training, efficiency, and expertise with advanced technology and state-of-the-art techniques ensure the highest standard of care for optimum function and aesthetics.

What Are Dental Crowns and Why Would You Require One?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are tooth-shaped restorations that we place over the visible portions of damaged teeth to strengthen them and restore their function and appearance. Dr. Blackmon may recommend a crown for the following purposes:

  • Protecting a weak or damaged tooth
  • Holding together the parts of a cracked tooth
  • Repairing a fractured, chipped, or broken tooth
  • Restoring a tooth requiring a large filling with not much tooth structure remaining
  • Covering and protecting a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Correcting the length and restoring the health of a severely worn-down tooth
  • Improving the size, shape, color, or appearance of a misshapen or a severely discolored tooth
  • Covering a dental implant or holding a dental bridge in place to replace one or more missing teeth

What Are the Types of Dental Crowns?

At Guided Smiles Prosthodontics & Implant Center, we offer crowns in various materials. Dr. Blackmon will evaluate your unique needs and help you determine the restoration material that works best for you.

Gold Crowns: Gold crowns are incredibly strong and durable. They rarely chip, break, or wear and require the removal of a minimal amount of tooth structure. Their major drawback is their color, and are often placed in the back on out-of-sight molars because of esthetic concerns.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: These crowns are closely matched to the color of your natural teeth, leaving you with natural-looking results. However, the metal sometimes shows through as dark lines along the gums. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are strong and durable, making them a good choice for front or back teeth.

All-Porcelain Crowns: These restorations provide superior esthetics, enabling an incredible color and texture match to your natural teeth. However, they are not as strong and durable as zirconia crowns. All-porcelain crowns deliver stunning results, making them ideal for restoring teeth that show when you smile.

Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are made from Zirconium dioxide, a crystal that is stable, resistant to wear, and practically indestructible. Despite its strong structure, we can easily shape, size, and color-match the material with results comparable to your natural teeth. Zirconia crowns are biocompatible, meaning the material is friendly to the surrounding gums and has a low probability of allergic reactions.
