What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of creating a calm and relaxed state using dental anesthetics. It is sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, although in most cases you will be awake and responsive to directions. However, you will feel calm, relaxed, and at ease. Depending on the type of sedation, you may have minimal recollection of the procedure.

Who Needs Sedation Dentistry?

We may recommend sedation dentistry for complex and lengthy procedures, and for patients with the following concerns:

  • Dental anxiety or fear of going to the dentist
  • An overly sensitive gag reflex
  • A fear of needles
  • A low pain threshold
  • Difficulty controlling movements
  • Extreme teeth sensitivity
  • Special physical, cognitive, or behavioral needs

What Are the Different Forms of Sedation?

Our experienced dental professionals at Guided Smiles Prosthodontics and Implant Center offer a range of safe and effective sedation options. Prior to your appointment, we will provide you with a detailed list of instructions and information to guide you through the process.

Nitrous Oxide Inhaled Sedation: We deliver a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask. You will be fully awake and conscious, but you will feel completely relaxed. Once we remove the mask, the effects of the sedation will wear off immediately.

Oral Sedation: You will take oral medications before the dental procedure. You will feel sleepy and relaxed, but should be awake and responsive. You will probably not remember much of the procedure. You will need assistance on the drive home and for a few hours until the effects of the medication completely wear off.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Our certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will administer the medication using an IV directly into your bloodstream. You will immediately feel the effects of the sedation and will be completely relaxed yet awake. You will need a trusted adult to help you on the drive home and stay with you for the rest of the day. Most patients are pleasantly surprised with how comfortable they felt throughout the procedure and the fact that they had no lingering memory of it.
